Exhibition Tour: Beijing · Shanghai · Urumqi · Florence, Italy · Barcelona, Spain · St. Petersburg, Russia
This touring exhibition showcases achievements in contemporary Chinese architecture, featuring 12 leading architects and academicians, including He Jingtang (designer of the China Pavilion for Expo 2010), Cheng Taining (designer of the Nanjing Museum), and Ma Yansong (designer of the Harbin Opera House).
The curatorial approach integrates architectural models, construction drawings, VR photogrammetry scans, and local cultural narratives. For instance, He Jingtang's original design sketches for the Expo China Pavilion were presented alongside ink animation installations.
For international presentations in Italy, Spain, and Russia, the exhibition was staged in partnership with local governments as part of their respective design weeks. In Beijing, it was co-organized with the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design; in Shanghai, in collaboration with Tongji University's Department of Architecture. Each iteration offered an immersive experience under the theme 'Architecture and the Coexistent City'.
The exhibition toured six cities and attracted over 800,000 visitors. A publication, 'Return 2017: BuildEast', was released in conjunction with the tour.
